For years now Bella Hadid has been open with the public about her ongoing battle with Lyme Disease, a tick-borne illness which is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and occasionally, Borrelia mayonii. Bella, her brother Anwar and their mother, Yolanda Hadid, have all battled the illness, sharing snippets of their journeys across social media.
Just a week ago her sister, model Gigi Hadid, shared with her followers on Instagram that Bella had been undergoing an intense treatment for the disease and was reportedly taking a step back from work in order to focus on her health.
On Sunday, Bella shared a series of pictures on Instagram chronicling her medical journey, thanking her family, fans, and colleagues for their support, while also noting that she’ll be “…back when I’m ready.”
“Living in this state, worsening with time and work while trying to make myself, my family, and the people who support me, proud, had taken a toll on me in ways I can’t really explain. To be that sad and sick with the most blessings/privilege/opportunity/love around me was quite possibly the most confusing thing ever,” she wrote in a recent Instagram caption.
On Monday evening she shared another series of photos on Instagram, a combination of pictures that included snaps of her treatment; snuggling her dog, and enjoying the summer weather with August Quinif, who is part of her management team at IMG.
While symptoms vary widely, those diagnosed with the disease suffer from fever, headaches, extreme fatigue, and a skin rash, called erythema migrans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While some cases can be cured with a round of antibiotics many people experience debilitation long-term symptoms. According to Bella’s records which she shared in an Instagram post, the 26-year-old model suffers from exhaustion, depression and has had memory problems since feeling affected, along with a whole host of other symptoms – including ADHD and muscle weakness.

While the model has not confirmed whether or not she’ll be sitting out this season, from her recent photos and Instagram captions it’s very clear that she’s focusing on her health in the near future.
Therefore, we would be surprised if she has plans to skip fashion month entirely. Bella has not yet confirmed whether or not she plans to attend any of the shows.
