Can Britney Spears Actually Get Married? Everything You Need To Know About The Star’s Engagement And How The Conservatorship Affects It

The singer announced the news on Instagram in the early hours of Monday morning, with a video post featuring herself and her new fiancé

Pop sensation Britney Spears shook the internet today when she announced her engagement to long-time boyfriend, personal trainer and actor Sam Asghari.

Britney, 39, and Sam, 27, have been together since 2016 when they met on the set of her music video for Slumber Party.

The couple took to Instagram, sharing their happy news and showing off the singer’s gorgeous four-carat engagement ring, custom designed by master jeweller Roman Malayev, in collaboration with the founder of New York-based Forever Diamonds NY.

The company shared a close-up video of Britney’s ring on their Instagram page as well, revealing a delicate engraving of the word “Lioness,” Sam’s personal nickname for Britney, on the inside of the band.

“Thank you for helping me design a ring for a real life princess,” Sam wrote in the comments.

Naming the ring “The Britney,” more details were shared on the company’s official website, noting that “Sam selected a 4 carat round brilliant stone in a platinum cathedral setting. He enhanced this timeless floating solitaire design with pavé detailing on the bridge and flush set diamonds on the prongs and basket…”

Sam appears to have popped the question one month after Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, agreed to step down as her conservator, and just one week after the official papers were filed in a Los Angeles court.

But can Britney Spears actually get married?

According to The Guardian, the singer can tie-the-knot but only if the conservatorship approves it — and while Jamie may no longer be in charge, whichever individual (or entity) that steps into the shoes next will still need to give her permission to wed.

Britney has expressed her wishes to remarry and her desire to have more children, however, the conservatorship under her father’s oversight has thwarted her plans throughout the past few years. Previously, she was married to backup dancer and rapper Kevin Federline. The couple divorced in 2007 and have two sons together, Sean and Jayden.
