Gigi Hadid is Done With Twitter
The supermodel deleted her account on Friday
I’ll tell you a little secret: I fantasize about deleting my social media accounts – and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. Unfortunately, in my line of work, it isn’t possible to spontaneously quit the likes of Big Social cold turkey. However, there is one platform many people around the world have been quietly (or not so quietly) stepping away from in the wake of current events…
Gigi Hadid deleted her Twitter account on Friday – the same day Elon Musk, the micro-blogging platform’s new owner – laid off nearly half of the platform’s workforce.
According to Page Six, the 27-year-old supermodel shared a message with her followers, stating “for a long time, but especially with its new leadership… it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and its not a place I want to be a part of.”
Twitter’s entire Human Rights team was let go in the layoffs. Gigi shared a screenshot of Shannon Raj Singh, former Human Rights Counsel at Twitter’s, tweet confirming the news. “Only sorry to the fans, who I’ve loved connecting with for a decade via Twitter, but I can’t say it’s a safe place for anyone, nor a social platform that will do more good than harm,” she wrote underneath the tweet within her Instagram Stories.
Gigi Hadid still remains active on Instagram. Her sister, Bella Hadid, still appears to have a verified Twitter account but hasn’t posted a tweet since August 2022.
A number of other celebrities and notable individuals who work in the entertainment industry have also stated they’ll be stepping away from the platform. According to The Washington Post Grammy award winner Toni Braxton, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and American singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles have all announced they’ll no longer be using the platform.
