The 38-year-old Portuguese professional football player has found himself consistently in the headlines of some of the most prestigious publications — and at one point, it was for his copious achievements and awards such as amassing a hefty five Ballon d’Or awards to having earnt 32 trophies within his lengthy professional career.
However, looking back, it almost feels like a blur — the bad press overriding the good and it arguably began when Cristiano left Manchester United by “mutual agreement” with “immediate effect” on November 22, 2022.
The professional footballer who now plays as captain and forward for the Saudi Professional League club, Al Nassr had opened up during an interview with Piers Morgan. In the interview, Cristiano targeted multiple people including his boss, Erik ten Hag, “I don’t have respect for him. Because he doesn’t show respect for me. If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you,” and even added that he “felt betrayed” by the club.
The controversy didn’t end there. Cristiano then officially joined Al Nassr in December 2023 but was immediately hit with a suspension due to an altercation involving the 38-year-old batting a phone out of a fan’s hand last year, this meant Cristiano would have to miss out on two games.
Additionally, during an official presentation in Riyadh, the professional football player mistook Saudi Arabia for South Africa. According to Outlook India, Cristiano said “For me, it is not the end of my career to come to South Africa,” moments before stepping out on the field. And now, he’s being faced with deportation.

According to Khaleej Times, a video consisting of the 38-year-old partaking in inappropriate behaviour as he walks off the field as Al Hilal fans chant his long-time rival, Messi’s name has been circulating online.
A Saudi lawyer, Nouf bint Ahmed, published the video on Twitter condemning the act and insisted that Cristiano be penalised by the law. In Nouf’s caption, she stated his behaviour was a ‘crime’ and that it falls under public decency laws which state that a foreigner who commits such an act must be arrested and deported.
Al Nassr has commented on the gesture, saying it is in relation to an injury in the groin area following a mishap with an Al Hilal player.
