In 2024, Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, will commence on Thursday, January 25th, marking the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar’s new year. This significant traditional holiday in Chinese culture typically lasts for 15 days, with celebrations concluding on the 15th day with the Lantern Festival. The festivities will come to an end on Thursday, February 8th, 2024, although celebrations will carry on throughout the weekend.

The year 2024 is designated as the Year of the Dragon, specifically the Wood Dragon, according to the Chinese zodiac cycle. Individuals born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to possess traits such as ambition, passion, and confidence.

How do people celebrate Chinese New Year?

Preparations for Chinese New Year begin well in advance, with families engaging in thorough house cleaning to sweep away any lingering bad luck and make room for the arrival of good fortune. Homes are adorned with vibrant red decorations and intricate paper-cuttings, as red symbolizes luck and happiness in Chinese culture.

The festival’s highlight is the reunion dinner held on New Year’s Eve, where family members come together to partake in a sumptuous feast. Traditional dishes served during this auspicious meal include fish, dumplings, spring rolls, and various other symbolic foods.

As midnight approaches, fireworks and firecrackers illuminate the sky, symbolizing the dispelling of evil spirits and the ushering in of good luck for the new year. Red envelopes containing money, known as “hongbao,” are exchanged as gifts among family and friends to bestow blessings of prosperity and good fortune.

Throughout the festival, communities abound with vibrant dragon and lion dances, parades, and cultural performances, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie. Chinese New Year is a time for cherished family reunions, jubilant celebrations, and hopeful anticipation for the year ahead.
