Four Things You Need To Know About The 2017 MTV VMAs
It’s August, which means the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) are but weeks away. Here’s everything we know so far…
Gendered Categories Have Been Removed
That’s right, for the first time ever, the VMAs have earsed gendered categories, meaning all male and female artists will compete for the same award. So, for example, the Best Female Video and Best Male Video awards will now be combined into a new category: Artist of the Year. MTV already removed the male/female distinction from its Movie Awards, which aired in May.
There’s a Brand New Category
“Best Fight Against The System” is the newest addition to the awards. The category aims to celebrate videos that inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice. Among the nominees are John Legend, Big Sean and Taboo ft. Shailene Woodley.
Katy Perry Will Host the Event
The Firework songstress has been confirmed has the host of the event. Perry announced the news on her Twitter, writing “Introducing your MOONWOMAN. Brace for impact! August 27th on @MTV @VMAs.” The 31-year old singer will also perform at the event.
