A Look Back At Christian Louboutin’s Most Memorable Celebrity Moments
In celebration of the French fragrance, beauty and footwear designer’s birthday today we remember a few times when A-Listers simply couldn’t help themselves when it came to sharing their love for his red-soled shoes
“A woman carries her clothes, but the shoe carries the woman.”
Poetic words by the French-Egyptian designer, best known for inventing the red soled shoes we all love..
Christian Louboutin was born in Paris; a son of a cabinetmaker and housewife, he was a troublesome student with an imagination than ran rampant. The young Louboutin was expelled not once, by thrice from school until he made up his mind to run away when he was just twelve years old. (His mother let him stay with a friend and soon the nightlife of Paris became his playground.)
It wasn’t until a fateful visit to Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie that his affinity for high heels revealed itself…
A teeny sign in an exhibit forbidding women from wearing “pointed” shoes inspired the designer. “I wanted to create something that broke rules and made women feel confident and empowered,” he said.
As for the famed scarlet colour painted on the bottom? Louboutin spotted a worker painting her nails a piercing red. Inspired, he took the bottle of polish and painted the bottom of a pair of shoes – the rest is history.
His red-lacquered soles have donned the feet of many celeb and royal. Gossip Girl star, Blake Lively once had the designer create not one but two shoes for her Baroque look at the Met Gala in 2018.
Cardi B sings her praises in her breakout song, “Bodak Yellow.” (“These expensive, these is red bottom/these is bloody shoes.”)
Jennifer Lopez devoted a whole song to them in “Louboutins,” performed on stage with a giant replica of the designer’s pumps.
Wearing a pair of “red bottoms” have no doubt become a status symbol.
Louboutins come in many forms, not just for the toes but for your nails and lips as well. The designer has since migrated into the beauty, fragrance and accessories world, allowing for different ways to wear his trademarked ruby red colour. Including one hard to find lipstick with a striking red hue that’s sure to cause some double takes.
Synonymous with success, when you have a pair of Louboutins on your feet, you know you’ve made it – and the colour red will never be the same.
Happy Birthday, Christian Louboutin!
