MTV Europe Music Award 2020: Here’s What You Missed
Forgot to tune into this year’s socially-distanced virtual event? See all the highlights from the evening below
This year’s EMAs might have been out of the ordinary (isn’t just about everything in 2020?), but that certainly doesn’t mean the evening was a write-off – in fact, the awards ceremony wowed viewers regardless of where they were tuning in from around the world
From perfectly streamed performances to the vibrant virtual audience, while the event might have been a bit shorter than usual it was still a night to remember. Bazaar shares all the highlights from the MTV Europe Music Award 2020 here.
1| For the first time ever, the awards ceremony was broadcasted from different corners of the world
According to tradition, each year a different European city hosts the event – and this year it was supposed to be Budapest’s turn. However, COVID-19 forced the awards ceremony to go virtual (like many other music awards which took place in recent months); so, for the first time ever, the EMAs were broadcasted from different cities in the world, from London to Budapest.
2| From London to Budapest: Three hosts and a correspondent
Little Mix – minus Jesy Nelson, who couldn’t make it due to health reasons – virtually hosted the event from a high-tech super stadium in London.
Throughout the night, the British girl-band connected a few times with Hungarian VS model, Barbara Palvin, who was correspondent in Budapest representing which was supposed to be this year’s EMA’s host city.
We have to admit it: we still can’t get over her stunning in this metallic fringed outfit and utterly cute mini side hair-buns! An absolute winner we might be recreating for a future night out
3| Little Mix’s outfits were off-the-charts stunning
As every year, all eyes are on the host’s secret outfits – and on this occasion we certainly weren’t disappointed. With two outfit changes, Leigh, Jade and Perrie certainly didn’t let us down at all!
4| Doja Cat was all punk rock-inspired with “Say So” for the opening number
The American singer stole the show with a never-seen-before punk rock version of her hit Say So, performing it in a grunge-inspired set that was filled with daisies and giving us some serious 90’s vibes.
5| K-Pop took over the European Awards
K-Pop best-selling band, BTS, took home four of the five awards they were nominated to – including Song of the Year, Best Fans and Best Band – proclaiming themselves as the leading winners of the night, followed by Lady Gaga and awards ceremony hosts Little Mix; Gaga took home the MTV EMAs honorific award for Best Artist out of her seven nominations.
6| David Guetta’s night to remember: A birthday celebration, a well-deserved award, and a brilliant performance in Budapest
The French DJ – who has recently been named as the world’s best DJ – lit up Budapest’s sky with a top performance of his latest hit, Let’s Love, featuring Raye at the city’s emblematic Széchenyi Bath.
If this wasn’t enough, the renowned DJ also took home the award for “Best Electronic,” while also joining correspondent Barbara Palvin in Budapest… all just a day after his 53rd birthday.
7| Alicia Keys dazzled during her performance – and not just for her incredible singing
It’s no news to anyone that Alicia Keys shines everywhere she goes with her iconic piano, and the EMAs were no exception. The American singer stepped out to the streets of Los Angeles with her iconic piano to perform Love Looks Better from her latest studio album, Alicia, stealing everyone’s hearts and shining bright – as always – with her stunning vocals…and her mask.
The singer stepped out wearing a full Moschino facemask embellished with tiny diamonds.
