Nicole Kidman Says She And Reese Witherspoon Are “Exploring” A Third Season Of Big Little Lies

The actress says the Monterey Five could return

Although Big Little Lies creator David E Kelley recently dampened expectations of a third season of the award-winning drama, Nicole Kidman has revealed that she and Reese Witherspoon are “exploring” the possibility of more misadventures with the Monterey five.

The actress told Lorraine on the red carpet last night: “Reese and I just spoke literally two days ago and we were going, ‘Yeah…’ I mean we were both saying it’s one of the best experiences we’ve ever had. It’s definitely not right now, but we’re definitely exploring it.”

Season two saw Meryl Streep’s debut as Kidman’s mother-in-law Mary Louise searching for answers about the death of her son Perry (Alexander Skarsgard), and trying to seek custody of her two young grandsons. Fans loved her powerful performance which many predict will earn the Hollywood legend Emmy and Golden Globe nominations next year.

Kelley previously told ET about a potential third series: “No such plan now… It’s one and two, and we like our closure with season two, but that will probably be it.”

HBO boss Casey Bloys compounded Kelley’s sentiments by telling TV Line: “Look, if they all came to me and said, ‘We worked out all of our schedules!’ – then sure. But I just don’t think it’s realistic.”

However, Kidman – who also served as executive producer on the series with Witherspoon – previously suggested that series 2 was not the end.

“There’s no plan for it to end, specifically,” the star explained. “This was a long shoot for us, and it was an enormous amount of work, and we’re just amazed that we can be here. Not to compare it to the first one because artistically it’s a wonderful thing to take something and go – and the success of the first one was so massive – so we go, ‘OK, let’s jump off the cliff.’

“But at the same time, it is its own entity and hopefully it will be taken that way. It was definitely made with an enormous amount of love.”
