They might have had a different look this year in light of the pandemic, but there still were plenty of moments to remember that didn’t disappoint. Winners making history, Glenn Close showing off her dance moves and many more…

Despite the on-going pandemic, a two-month delay; shortage of attendees. and a ceremony held between the iconic Dolby Theatre and Los Angeles defunct Union Station, the Academy didn’t disappoint and offered us a night of great moments and striking looks to remember – yes, there was a real red carpet, just like it used to be pre-COVID.

If you missed some of these moments, keep reading to stay up to date with the top seven highlights from yesterday’s awards ceremony.

1 | Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson: First African-American Women to Win An Oscar for Best Hair and Makeup

The two creative minds behind the hair and makeup creations of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom were honoured with the Oscar award for their contribution to the production.

Mia, who worked as the department head, and Jamika, as Viola Davis’ personal hairstylist, made history while being awarded with the Oscar, being the first African-American women to win an Academy Award for this category.

While accepting her award, Mia stated the following with excitement:

“I stand here, as Jamika, and I break this glass ceiling with so much excitement for the future. I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it will just be normal.”

“I can picture Black trans women standing up here.

And Asian sisters.

And our Latina sisters.

And indigenous women.

And I know that one day it won't be unusual or groundbreaking.

It will just be normal.”

2 | Chloe Zhao Also Made History Twice With Her Award for Best Director

The 39-year old Nomadland director became the first Asian woman – and the second woman ever – to win the Best Director Award.

With this award, the legendary Welsh actor dethroned the late Christopher Plummer, who was just 82 when he won an Oscar for Beginners, back in 2012.

4 | Glenn Close Showed Off Her Dance Skills

The nominated actress surprised and delighted the crowd when she got up to dance to E.U.’s Da Butt with her dazzling electric blue gown during a round of trivia about past Oscar-nominated songs – and let us tell you, age is not a problem because she’s got the moves!

5 | Youn Yuh-Jung Was Completely Starstruck

The 74-year-old South-Korean actress not only made history by becoming the first Korean actress to win an Oscar, but she also added a jolt of wicked charisma to the night when she met Brad Pitt and Glenn Close for the first time.

During an interview on the red carpet, the awarded actress was approached by Glenn Close and showed the sweet excitement of meeting her for the first time. It was a moment for the books! But this wasn’t the only time she showed her charismatic attitude during the night.

While receiving her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Minari, Youn made a special nod to Brad Pitt who presented her with the award – and who’s company happened to be part of Minari’s production.

“Mr. Brad Pitt, finally, nice to meet you. Where were you while we were filming in Tulsa?” – Jokingly teased Youn to Pitt while accepting her award.

Another one of the sweet and funny moments she led onstage was also during her acceptance speech, telling her other female nominated actresses: “we cannot compete [with] each other”, but later admitted with a giggle, “I’m luckier than you”.

“We played a different role, so we cannot compete with each other. Tonight I'm here as just… I have just a little bit of luck. I think maybe, I'm luckier than you.”

6 | Riz Ahmed Fixing His Wife’s Hair – sweetest couple goals moment ever!

It was already known that the Oscar-nominated actor was a gem of a gentleman – as he proposed to his wife using Scrabble tiles – but this sweet act of love he had with wife Fatima Farheen Mirza made our hearts melt.

The actor asked the photographers to hold on for a sec while he fixed his wife’s hair so she could look impeccable for the cameras – and we all fell in love.

7 | 2021’s Oscars also had an awkward moment: The confusing ending…

As the ceremony was coming to an end, many people were confused because the Best Picture award was being announced and the categories of Best Actor and Actress hadn’t been awarded yet. However, people thought the reason behind this switch was because they were going to give the award to the late Chadwick Boseman and make him a tribute to close the night. But things didn’t go that way, and Joaquin Phoenix who was presenting actually turned out pretty confused.

Phoenix was expecting – as the rest of the invitees – that he was going to read Chadwick Boseman’s name for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom…but instead he ended up reading Anthony Hopkin’s who wasn’t at the event – where only the nominees had to attend.

But what is an Oscar without a weird moment like this one? Who doesn’t remember Warren Beatty’s wrong announcement for the Best Picture award?
