Alexi Lubomirski had around three minutes to capture the shot

Alexi Lubomirski says it took him only three minutes to capture the most popular official royal wedding photograph. The image of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex smiling on the steps of Windsor Castle has so far received on 2.3 million likes on Kensington Palace’s Instagram feed.

Lubomirski, the Harper’s Bazaar photographer who shot the couple’s engagement shots, said the pair were about to head into the reception when he asked to take just a few more pictures.

“I said, ‘Listen, just before you go in let’s sit down on these stairs,’ and she just slumped in between his legs,” he told the BBC.

“There was this moment where they were just laughing because they were joking about how they were exhausted and finally it’s all over and they just looked at each other and they were just laughing. It was just this beautiful moment.”

The photographer also took the group family portraits of the royal family and Meghan Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland. He highlighted the importance of making the images look natural, rather than overly formal and stiff.

“I wanted it to feel like a family picture, I didn’t want it to feel too much like a sports team photo or an army photo, or very regimented and linear,” he explained.
