The Arts Club Dubai Announces Two New Summer Exhibitions
The Club presents Geometric Bodies: Regional and Diaspora Artists and Radical Threads, dedicated to highlighting the contemporary art scene
While the Arts Club is a cultural haven that supports the artistic landscape, the members-only club has launched two new summer exhibitions for their ongoing programme focusing on the contemporary art scene in the Middle Eastern region – which will also be open for public upon RSVP.
The exhibitions are curated by Amelie von Wedel and Pernilla Holmes of Wedel Art – who also curate the permanent collection and exhibition programmes at The Arts Club International; supporting the club’s vision of bringing forward thoughtful and timely contemporary art to its members and the public.
Here, we shed light on both the exhibitions – Geometric Bodies: Regional and Diaspora Artists and Radical Threads…
Geometric Bodies: Regional and Diaspora Artists
Geometric Bodies, a summer exhibition, honours Dubai’s burgeoning art industry by displaying regional and diaspora artists, especially from Dubai galleries.
Despite the fact that the exhibition’s theme of geometric abstraction emerged organically, it’s difficult to overlook the Middle East’s long history of geometric abstraction, which can also be seen in the current regional art scene.
Fahd Burki. A Tribe Of One’s Own. 2020. Wood, canvas, acrylic paint. 101.2×72.2×4.1cm
Staying true to the region’s rich history, today’s artists do not hesitate to create art in a radically different context – while blending inspirations from the past with modern issues.
Though, each of the artists in the exhibition has their own distinct ideas and aesthetic, they are linked by geometric view of the world that allows them to build dialogues with one another.
Kamrooz Aram. Ornamental Composition for Social Spaces 2. 2016. Oil, wax and pencil on canvas. 213.36×182.88cm
Featured, to name just two, are Maryam Hoseini’s paintings which explore the political, social, and personal conditions of identity and gender while examining the concept of ruins, displacement and fracture as well as Pakistani artist Fahd Burki works which focus on the act of image-making – using geometry and colour to push the boundaries of two-dimensionality.
Participating Dubai-based galleries include: Lawrie Shabibi, Green Art Gallery, Grey Noise, Carbon 12 and The Third Line; and Athr Gallery from Jeddah.
Jordan Nassar. Pebbles in a Dip. 2021.
Radical Threads
Radical Threads brings together cutting-edge contemporary works that challenge the historical dominance of painting and sculpture in ‘high art’.
In the modern world, textiles have become almost a new language in the art scene, represending a restructure of ideas about cultural differences such as ethnicity and traditional stereotypes. For this part of the exhibition, each artist has used textiles for different reasons, all the while responding to current events and the history of art.Â
Farhad Ahrarnia. A Certain Situation No.14. 2020.
Visitors can also view the work of celebrated artists like Etel Adnan, Hangama Amiri, Laleh Khorramian, and Moffat Takadiwa, and works by international galleries like Sfeir-Semler (Beirut/Hamburg), Lawrie Shabibi (Dubai), T293 (Rome), Fridman Gallery (New York), Nicodim Gallery (Los Angeles/Bucharest), Roberts Projects (Los Angeles).
The exhibition will allow art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the world of creativity.
The show is open for members and the public until 23 October, 2021 at The Arts Club Dubai, DIFC Dubai
