The Weeknd Donates One Million Dollars In Support Of Relief Efforts In Ethiopia
The funds have been donated to the U.N. World Food Programme, which will provide two million meals to the country affected by on-going conflict
Canadian-Ethiopian singer, songwriter, and record producer known as The Weeknd has donated one million dollars (approx Dhs3.6 million) to the UN World Food Programme. According to the World Food Programme USA, the funds will support hunger relief in Ethiopia that will provide food to those affected by the region’s conflict.
The Grammy award winning artist posted on Instagram one day ago confirming his donation.
“My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction. I will be donating $1 million to provide 2 million meals through the United Nations World Food Programme and encourage those who can to please give as well, Donation link in bio,” he shared in a recent Instagram post.
World Food Programme USA President and CEO Barron Segar mentions “We are extremely concerned about the food security situation in Tigray. As poor households exhaust food stocks, people will fall deeper into emergency levels of hunger. This generous donation from The Weeknd will provide immediate lifesaving food for people who need it urgently.”
This is not the first time the famous singer has donated for a cause; he donated a considerable amount to COVID-19 relief in 2020, the Black Lives Matter Global Network, supporting George Floyd’s death, and many more.
