Why Is Travis Scott’s Concert In Egypt Cancelled?
The stage was set for a historic event as American rapper Travis Scott geared up to perform at the iconic Pyramids of Giza on July 28, 2023. The highly anticipated show, announcing his forthcoming album Utopia, sold out in just 30 minutes when it was first announced. However, the excitement was short-lived as the Musicians’ Syndicate of Egypt reportedly called off the event, citing several culturally-sensitive reasons for their decision.
In a statement on behalf of the Musicians’ Syndicate, spokeperson Dr. Mohamed Abdullah emphasized the need to prioritize security and obtain approvals from relevant authorities for organizing concerts, ensuring audience safety. The Syndicate, in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Labor, sets conditions and regulations to preserve Egyptian customs and traditions.
After examining social media opinions, where the hashtag cancel Travis show had been doing the rounds since early last week, and authenticating images and information about peculiar rituals during the singer’s performances, the Syndicate’s president and board of directors decided to cancel the show’s license. “As the Musicians’ Syndicate is part of the fabric of our beloved country, it works towards its stability and security and rejects any tampering with the societal values, customs, and traditions of Egypt and the Arab world. After examining social media opinions and feedback, as well as the news circulating on search engines and social media platforms, which included authenticated images and information about peculiar rituals performed by the star during his performance, contradicting our authentic societal values and traditions, the Syndicate’s president and board of directors have decided to cancel the license issued for hosting this type of concert, which goes against the cultural identity of the Egyptian people,” added Dr.Mohamed in a statement to Egypt Today.
As of now, there has been no official comment from Travis Scott or his team regarding the cancellation.
