#ChicEats: Brother Marcus, London

This stylish eatery has some of the best brunch options in the city

Curated by three school friends of various talents, Brother Marcus was brought to life by Alex Large, Arthur Campbell and Tasos Gaitanos, originally created as a weekend brunch haunt, which has since evolved into a fully-fledged restaurant, best known for their brilliant breakfast options.

Just round the corner from Balham Station, with a glass facade giving you a sneak peak through the restaurant, the space is light and bright, with wooden tables and chairs (made by the boys) adorning the long, skinny interiors. It’s a relaxed atmosphere, which seats 35 inside and 28 outside. Design is minimal but it works, with a composition of stone, cream and caramel complimenting the wood and greenery. Walls are lined with lovely pieces of purchasable art, whilst shelves are full of nick-nacks and potted plants, giving the entire space a cosy and homely feel to it.

The homely feel continued throughout the experience, with one of the owners serving our food and preparing the coffee whilst the other cooked. Focused on seasonal, organic and the highest quality produce, the menu looked fantastic, with eggs coming from St. Ewes in Cornwall, organic sourdough from The Celtic Bakers and the delicious beetroot cured salmon perfected in-house.

Their brunch is available daily, featuring dishes such as Sister Special with avocado, spinach, poached eggs, bacon and sourdough and the Brother Special poached eggs, asparagus, smoke salmon, avocado and spinach. Sitting alongside the brunch menu are seasonal small plates such as halloumi with blood orange and pistachios and rye bread topped with goat’s cured, walnuts, dates and agave syrup. A selection of freshly baked gluten free cakes and bread are also available, made in house, daily.

Wanting to sample a selection of both sweet and savoury, we started with a small Bali Bowl, made with banana, almond and turmeric, topped with fresh fruit, goji berries, chia seeds and coconut. Refreshing and full of flavour, this is an excellent start to any brunch at Brother Marcus. Savoury options arrived in the form of The Step Sister with courgette, beets & feta fritter, avocado, spinach and poached egg and the Yummy Mummy, a concoction of spring green peas, beetroot hummus and black quinoa with cherry tomato salsa and goat’s curd on toast.

A new favourite on the brunch scene, Brother Marcus is an experience that definitely won’t disappoint.
