The Macallan Celebrates Its 200th Anniversary With Two New Extraordinary Whiskies
TIME : SPACE COLLECTION was created in honour of its 200 Years Young milestone and its unmatched craftsmanship
Patience and an appreciation of the preciousness of time are two essential attributes for any whisky maker. This year, to celebrate its 200th anniversary, The Macallan has produced two magnificent whiskies that play with the idea of time travel, not only by paying homage to the history of the distillery, but also by showing a path to the future.
The first expression in the momentous TIME : SPACE COLLECTION is a dual chamber vessel that includes the oldest whisky released by The Macallan at 84 years old, plus a second single malt that marks the debut of the brand’s new distillery. A representation of the past, the 1940 liquid has a wonderful richness and depth, with aromas of dark chocolate coated ginger, dates and leather followed by tastes on the palate of charred pineapple, baked peaches, crystalised ginger, aniseed, blackberry jam and sweet woodsmoke. The 2018 vintage, meanwhile, points to the future and is the first ever whisky from The Macallan’s new distillery. Notes of green apple, ripe pears, toffee and honey lead to sultanas, baked apples, buttery pastry, lemon and lime, plus vanilla shortbread on the palate.
Limited to 200 pieces to mark The Macallan’s bicentennial, this unique vessel is housed in a beautiful oak sculpture crafted from alternating layers of American and European oak to reflect the use of sherry seasoned oak casks in whisky making.
The second release, TIME : SPACE Mastery, is a complex and unique single malt featuring 14 exceptional cask types. It delights the nose with Medjool dates, sweet baked figs, milk chocolate, honey, dried mango and papaya, before seducing the palate with layers of dried fruit, orange marmalade, honeycomb, ginger and cinnamon. These special new whiskies bear The Macallan’s anniversary logo, created by artist Alex Trochut, which represents the River Spey as it meanders through The Macallan Estate in Scotland.
