8 Summer Movies and TV Shows to Stream Right Now
Find yourself needing a show to curl up to? Indulge on the latest summer releases for a cool escape from the July heat…
I don’t typically associate watching TV as a routine summertime activity, but for these flicks, I’ll make an exception. Sometimes you just need to stave off that potential sunburn, and in the age of COVID allowing yourself some screen time is the perfect distraction.
Here are some of the buzziest things to watch right now…
1. Riviera (Amazon)
This show is a full on Soap Opera, with the acting and writing to match but visually it’s gorgeous, and the real estate is insane! (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/12061874/Briton…) And we are really only here for the eye candy anyway.
2. Gossip Girl (HBO Max)
Sure, as a New Yorker, I had some thoughts but that doesn’t mean the show isn’t fun. The fashion is amazing and there’s still plenty of rich kids hijinks to go around. If you loved the original version, this one will give you opinions and it’s still a wild ride.
3. Home Before Dark (Apple TV)
I loved this show when it came out last year in the early days of COVID. It’s a thriller that will keep you on your toes, and we love the fact that 9 year old reporter wunderkind Hilde Lisko solves a decade-old mystery that even her reporter dad couldn’t solve. We love a girl power moment.
4. Cruel Summer (Freeform)
Come for the 90s Nostalgia, and stay for the nuanced portrayal of the way the kidnapping of the town’s golden girl exposes the secrets and lies everyone else is trying to hide. Seriously, the fashion is incredible to watch, and the soundtrack is even better.
5. Luca (Disney Plus)
Yes, I am thirty years old and I’m recommending a children’s movie. It’s all about the friends you make in the summer during your childhood and it’s heartwarming (I definitely cried) with such a cute premise. Set in a fictional town that’s inspired by Cinque Terre in Italy, the animators got the scenery and summer Italian vibes down completely. So in addition to being about those halcyon days and friendship, it’s also aspirational in case you can’t make it to Italy this year.
6. Loki (Disney Plus)
Maybe you’re not a fan of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I bet you’re a fan of Tom Hiddleston or Owen Wilson or English actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Still worth the watch and an added bonus to the Marvel series.
7. Black Widow (Disney Plus)
Again, watch this movie for the family and sisterhood vibes. (Florence + Scarlet forever!) The completely devastating cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Malia J in the opening credits has been on repeat ever since I watched this movie.
8. Legally Blonde (Netflix)
Obviously not a new film, but with the girlie flick turning twenty this year 20th (I know, what?!) it’s still a complete gem and holds up extremely well in the age of the internet. Plus that courtroom scene is still so iconic.
