Because She Created: Netflix Launches Writing Programme For Women In Egypt

The project, in collaboration with Arab screenwriting hub Sard, is making moves to bring women in the arts to the forefront

“Because She Created”, Netflix’s new screenwriting programme for women from underrepresented communities in Egypt, has a noble cause and it’s taking all the right steps to fulfill it. Launched in collaboration with Sard, the hub for scriptwriters in the Arab world, it is opening its doors in September.

“Sard believes that expressing oneself through writing is the first step to self-discovery, and we’re proud to have discovered talent through this program that we feel will one day become scriptwriters of the future,” said Mariam Naoum, CEO & Founder of Sard. “Women in the region, in particular, need this kind of incubation and technical support to gain access to opportunities that advance their professional growth in an industry where their presence is still limited.”

The program will take on 20 brilliant women from outside the capital city of Cairo and provide them with training, tools and exposure to take their creative prowess to the next level. The end goal is to refine their skills, hone their talent and package them to showcase their work on international platforms, thereby empowering them to lead better lives.

The initiative is part of the ‘Netflix Fund for Creative Equity’, which works towards uplifting creatives in the entertainment industry from areas with scarce opportunities.

The five-day program is a comprehensive training schedule that will include classes on storytelling and creative expression, talks by entertainment professionals and trips to the cinema and theater.

“Because She Created” has been an ongoing initiative geared towards empowering creative women, with the ‘Because She Created Collection’ featuring 21 films by Arab female filmmakers launched by Netflix last month.
