Jeanne Du Barry Costumes: Chanel Took Centre Stage At The 76th Cannes Film Festival

Bazaar Arabia shares a closer look at the film’s wardrobe

Coco Chanel once said, “A woman can be overdressed, but never over elegant.” The same notion could be partially said about the most overdressed and elegant era of Versailles in Maïwenn Le Besco’s new film, Jeanne du Barry. During an era when extravagance reigned, it only makes sense the storied brand would serve as the exclusive partner of this up-and-coming cinematic eye candy.

Starring Maïwenn and Johnny Depp in the leading roles, the film pulls the veil off King Louis XV and his mysterious mistress, Jeanne du Barry — who coincidentally shares the same birthday as Gabrielle Chanel on August 19th.

Inspired by the late Karl Lagerfeld’s Haute Couture collections, Maïwenn sought to include the brand by way of dress throughout the film.

“When preparing for the film began, I had so much documentation, including Chanel pieces from collections of the 1980s and 90s, inspired by the 18th century,” Maïwenn explains. “That’s why I wanted to collaborate with Virginie Viard on this project.”

The Maison created six costumes, lent prized gems from their High Jewelry collection, and took part in the main actors’ make-up with their Parfums-Beauté line. The film has already been met with much anticipation after its debut at Cannes earlier this week with Depp receiving a 6-minute standing ovation for his kingly performance.

The pairing between Chanel and the Era of Enlightenment will undoubtedly be a match made in fashion heaven. Set to stream on Netflix sometime in the future, we can only imagine.
