Rose and Layla, the highly anticipated Egyptian series starring none other than icons Yousra and Nelly Karim, marks the duo’s first-ever pairing in Egyptian cinema. The groundbreaking MBC production is set to launch on Shahid on January 11, 2024.
Written by British screenwriter Cris Cole and directed by Adrian Shergold, the trailblazing, Cairo-based, 10-episode series recounts the story of two financially distressed women who decide to form a clumsy female detective duo, comedically encountering all sorts of trials and tribulations along the way. With over four decades of cinematic excellence under her belt, Yousra masterfully portrays the role of Layla, whilst Nelly Karim capitalizes on over two decades of stardom in her portrayal of Rose.

Yousra spoke positively about the upcoming project at the 2023 Red Sea International Film Festival, particularly sharing a few words about her co-star Nelly Karim and the particularities of working on a project written and directed by a non-Arab duo. According to IMDb, the Egyptian icon expressed, “I think audiences will see us, Nelly and myself, in a very different light through Cris and Adrian’s work.”
The star additionally highlighted the collaborative nature of Rose and Layla, a project written and directed by a non-Arab duo. “When you write a script in English—or in any other language that isn’t Arabic—and then proceed to perform it in Arabic, it often needs to be adjusted even after being translated,” shares Yousra. She continued, “So at times I would say to Cris: this is what I should be saying in Arabic. But of course, he trusted me and Nelly.”
Speaking highly of her co-star Nelly Karim, Yousra expressed, “What I loved about Rose and Layla is that it’s brand new for me. It’s light comedy, and the chemistry between me and Nelly was amazing.”
Rose and Layla is scheduled for release on January 11, 2024 on MBC’s Shahid. The first-of-its-kind Egyptian series—written and directed by non-Arab duo Cris Cole and Adrian Shergold—marks Yousra and Nelly Karim’s first ever project together.
