MBC Group Announces Its Debut Arabic-Language Musical Sukkar

The one-of-a-kind musical is set to release on streaming platforms on October 12

On September 19, Saudi-owned production house MBC Group announced the release of Sukkar, the region’s first Arabic musical and the embodiment of Kuwaiti writer Heba Mishary Hamada’s and Egyptian director Tamer Mahdi’s artistic vision.

Inspired by the American novel Daddy Longs Legs, Sukkar narrates the events that transpire in the lives of a girl named Sukkar and her friends, who live in an orphanage and work together to face obstacles and harsh living conditions created by the head of the house, Ratiba. The musical follows the children’s journey as they overcome challenges by holding onto their dreams and the hope for a brighter future.

This trailblazing family film features many of the Arab world’s rising stars, including Hala Al-Turk, Arabs Got Talent 2011 contestant and the lead actor in the role of Sukkar. She is joined by young actors such as Moataz Hisham, Bavly Remon, Yasmine Al-Abd, Dima Ahmed, Mohamed Harbi, and Hajar Mohamed. Prominent actors, including the legendary Magda Zaki and comedy star Mohamed Tharwat, also join this star-studded cast.

The renowned Egyptian singer Ahmed Saad lends his voice to the film and sings all of the original songs in this feature. Lyrics are written by Heba Meshary Hamada and are composed by Ehab Abdel Wahed and Ahmed Tareq Yehya.

The movie set was built entirely from scratch, including key locations such as the orphanage, city, sewer canals and the Fruto Palace. All props and decorations were uniquely explicitly designed for this project.

How to watch Sukkar

The film will premiere across the Middle East and North Africa on October 12, and will be available to stream on one of Beirut’s largest film distributing platforms, Empire Entertainment and on MBC’s Shahid.
