The Crown Fans Predict Gillian Anderson Will Win Multiple Awards For Her Margaret Thatcher Portrayal

The actress takes on the Iron Lady for series 4 and is wowing viewers already

The Crown‘s eagerly-anticipated fourth series has only just arrived on Netflix – and already fans are calling for Gillian Anderson to win acting accolades for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.

The actress takes on the divisive Iron Lady for the latest season of Peter Morgan’s award-winning royal drama, and she is currently impressing viewers with her astonishing transformation.

Series 4, which arrives as the 1970s are drawing to a close, examines the impact of Thatcher’s controversial policies on the country, and her increasingly fractious relationship with the Queen, which gets even worse as she leads the country into the Falklands War.

It also touches on the royal family’s cold and snobbish response to Thatcher when she visits Balmoral for the weekend and fails to throw herself into their parlour games or outdoor pursuits such as hunting.

One fan wrote: “Just started watching #TheCrown, Gillian Anderson has been on the screen 10 seconds and I can already see a BAFTA & Golden Globe.”

Another commented: “Gillian Anderson is chillingly convincing as Margaret Thatcher – her voice and walk is uncannily similar to the former PMs.”

“Netflix’s decision to cast Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher is undoubtedly one of the best TV decisions ever made. A true acting masterclass!” an impressed viewer added.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about immersing herself into the role, the star explained: “I had to get to a point where it’s nothing to do with my opinions of her policies, of her actions. It is only about her as a human being and her motivation as a politician and as a mother.”

The crucial thing, Anderson added, “was not doing it so much that it ended up a parody”.

She also affirmed that wasn’t given any special treatment as the partner of writer Peter Morgan to shape her character. “For our own sanity, and actually for the benefit of the relationship, we had very clear boundaries,” Anderson recalled. “I am not going to comment on the script, but you are not allowed to comment on the performance!”

The Crown season 4 is now available to stream on Netflix.
