Turkish Blockbuster Bergen Takes The Region By Storm
Possibly one of the biggest films for Summer 2022…
Turkish film Bergen has caused a cinematic splash; after having debuted across the Middle East in mid-June, the film has since amassed over 370,000 admissions, breaking box-office records.
As reported by VOX Cinemas, it now gleamingly stands as “the most successful Turkish movie in the Middle East,” rewriting the possibilities bound to it by the Middle Eastern market. Bergen has pushed the envelope so far as to make it the first Turkish movie to access a theatrical release across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The film follows the tale of an eponymous protagonist met with an insurmountable barrage of hurdles. In a bid to keep her head above water, Bergen earned herself a righteous “cult following,” in turn, solidifying herself as “The Queen of Arabesque.”

Directed by Caner Alper and starring Farah Zeynep Abdullah as Bergen, the film emerged as the most screened Turkish movie in the region while also being chosen as the opening film at the Turkiye-Germany Film Festival this March. Interestingly, however, the film performed better in its second and third weekends of showing as opposed to its opening one.
“Turkish cinema has a rich history with a bright and creative community of talent and, in recent years, it has been flourishing not only the Middle East but also on the international festival circuit,” said Toni El Massih, Managing Director of Majid Al Futtaim Cinemas, in a Press Release.
Commenting on the domino-effect within the wider region, El Massih added, “Bergen has really struck a chord with movie-lovers across the region and surpassed all projections, demonstrating the appetite that audiences have for the rich storytelling that Turkey is known for.”

Bergen is currently screening in VOX cinemas across the Middle East, notably those in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon and Oman.
