Why Did Warner Bros. Cancel The Batgirl Movie?
The much anticipated film was supposed to release at the end of the year
It seems like DC’s fans will have to wait longer for another film from the franchise. Batgirl, the Warner Bros.-backed movie is apparently shelved, according to The New York Post. The film, which was slated to premiere on HBO Max and in theaters, had a budget of $70 million and was one of the most anticipated movie releases of 2022.
Batgirl, which was to be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, had breakout star Leslie Grace as the film’s lead. Its supporting cast members included J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser. The movie had begun shooting in November 2021 and was anticipated to be release at the end of this year.
Leslie Grace, best known for her role In The Heights, had expressed her excitement in essaying the iconic role of Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl) to Variety in April, calling it “insane” and mentioning a sequel.
So…Why Did DC Cancel The Batgirl Movie?
The New York Post reports test screenings for the film had been so poor that it propelled the production to cancel the film.
Although Warner Bros. have not officially released an explanation behind one of the most expensive movie cancellations in history, Variety alleges that this decision is was made by the company due to tax reasons as well.
