On The Pulse: Festive January Lights In New York

The American design powerhouse Rockwell Group deck out Lower Manhattan in a festive glow

Located in Brookfield Place, the Winter Garden atrium has played host to a variety of public events since its 1988 opening. This winter, an interactive light installation by Rockwell Group’s LAB Studio has transformed the space into a modern day wishing well.

‘Luminaries’ features hundreds of cubes — each illuminated with colour changing LED and programmed to create synchronised lightscapes. The installation stretches the entire width of the atrium and shelters a similar lighting installation of three white cubes on the ground floor that the designers have lovingly named ‘Wishing Stations’.

Visitors are invited to make their wish and touch the white cube. Upon touch, they can scroll through colours and select one they like. Almost like releasing ones wishes into the Universe, the colour of choice paints the LED canopy above… — Pratyush Sarup
