In a surprising turn of events the highly anticipated animated film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has been banned from release in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. This decision has several left fans feeling dismayed (and confused), sparking a lively discussion on the Reddit community r/dubai.

The film, a sequel to the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, has garnered immense love across the globe for its unique and immersive animation style as well as its storytelling techniques. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the film remains one of the most well-received superhero actions in history, with a 9.1 rating on IMDb and a 96% ‘Certified Fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Having already released in cinemas in the US and Canada, the Marvel production was about to debut in the UAE on June 22, ahead of the upcoming Eid Al-Adha holiday. However, earlier this week, all messaging and artwork showcasing its release were removed from all cinema operator’s websites. This was followed by fans receiving refund texts from Vox, Reel, and Roxy Cinemas for any pre-booked tickets.

The news has generated a buzz on social media platforms, with enthusiasts expressing their disappointment and frustration. In a Reddit thread dedicated to the topic, users voiced their opinions on the ban, sharing their eagerness to watch the film and disappointment at the decision.

One fan, u/Meowball115, commented, “I have been waiting for this movie for a long time. Plus with its amazing animation, it deserves to be watched properly. I hope it comes.”
