Majid Al Futtaim Announces It Will Phase Out Single-Use Plastic By 2025

Leading the way towards a more sustainable future

Picture this: you’ve nipped into Mall of the Emirates and are picking up some groceries in Carrefour. You head to the fruit and veg aisle, pop four apples into a little plastic sack and head for the till where you put your shopping into another plastic bag. And the worst thing? As soon as you get home, you throw said plastic carrier into the bin, ready to make the same mistake all over again next weekend.

Here to (finally) put a stop to the unnecessary consumption of single-use plastic, Majid Al Futtaim has announced it’s going green and will phase out the harmful material by 2025 – think no more plastic straws in the food court, no more pointless plastic bags at the cinema, and a stop to wasteful packaging in the supermarket.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do…because we understand the impact that climate change is having on our world,” says Ibrahim Al-Zu’bi, chief sustainability officer of Majid Al Futtaim. “The launch of our single-use plastic policy will help shift the needle by tackling one of the most pressing environmental challenges for our business and region.”

“No one country, company or individual alone can solve the crippling impact that plastic is having on our world,” adds Hani Weiss, Chief Executive Officer at Majid Al Futtaim. “At MAF, we are committed to playing our part in positively impacting the environment, while trying to influence others to make similar commitments. Reducing our dependence on single-use plastic is only the start; we hope to create a movement amongst the partners, suppliers and customers we engage with every day to ensure collective action.”

The phase-out process will also see the company roll out physical and digital campaigns to build awareness among customers to drive behavioural change. As Ibrahim Al-Zu’bi puts it, “from the staff to the customers, it’s all about educating, educating, educating.”
