She’s currently the world’s youngest queen.
Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema ascended to the role of queen at the age of 21 when she wed His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. This remarkable union not only marked her entry into royal life but also made her the youngest queen in the world. The couple is blessed with three children: Jigme Namgyel, the heir apparent to the throne, Jigme Ugyen, and Sonam Yangden.
She gained her education around the globe.
She attended St. Joseph’s Convent in West Bengal, India, and The Lawrence School in Himachal Pradesh.
For higher education, Queen Jetsun chose Regent’s University London, earning a degree in International Relations with minors in Psychology and Art History.
She looked ethereal on her wedding day.
The royal nuptials took place on October 13, 2011, at the Punakha Dzong, a stunning fortress in Bhutan. The love story of Queen Jetsun and the then-Crown Prince Jigme Khesar began at a family picnic during their childhood, according to her website and blossomed years later when they reunited while she was attending university.
For her wedding day, Queen Jetsun Pema wore a traditional Bhutanese Kira, an ankle-length dress, which was woven from raw silk and requires several months to create. The garment was paired with a wonju or long-sleeved blouse and a tego, a jacket-like outerwear piece.
She enjoys representing her heritage.
Queen Jetsun has been seen proudly wearing the traditional garment not just for her wedding but at various official events.
Her commitment to Bhutanese culture was on full display during the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the UK in 2023, where she was adorned in a beautiful lilac-hued Kira.
She loves spending time with her family.
Family is at the heart of Queen Jetsun’s life. Whether she’s enjoying the gardens of Lingkana Palace with her children or being photographed with her little ones for an official shoot, her Instagram page reflects her deep love and devotion to her family.
