King Charles And Queen Camilla Host The First Palace Garden Party Of The Year

The event was attended by British royals and members of the public “who have made a positive impact in their community”…

Buckingham Palace garden parties have resumed with gusto, marked by a surprise appearance from His Majesty King Charles as he hosted the inaugural event of the season.

His Majesty and Queen Camilla welcomed thousands of guests to the royal residence in London on Wednesday, May 8, continuing the historic tradition.

The palace garden parties started in the 1860s as a way for the ruling family to recognise community members for their public service.

His Majesty was also joined by the Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Princess Anne arrived in a royal blue ensemble and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, went with a pale pink long-sleeved dress with accessories to match.

Traditionally, the sovereign hosts three garden parties at Buckingham Palace and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland during the spring and summer months, inviting over 30,000 guests annually.

This year’s first event of the sort follows King Charles’ recent public engagement after undergoing cancer treatment. His Majesty and Queen Camilla had visited the Macmillan Cancer Centre in London on April 30.

“I think he was really thrilled to be out,” Camilla said the following day, as quoted by the Daily Mail

Amongst mingling with royals and enjoying the picturesque grounds, guests indulged in tea and cake, with over 27,000 cups of tea and 20,000 slices of cake being served.

Male attendees traditionally arrive in morning dress or lounge suits while women wear day dresses along with hats or fascinators, though national dresses and uniforms are also acceptable.

As for who gets an invite, the Royal Family’s Instagram account shared a video of the event and wrote in the caption: “…guests who have made a positive impact in their community are invited to spend a relaxed afternoon in the beautiful gardens of Buckingham Palace.”
