COP28, the 28th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference which aims to discuss important climate considerations in the present and future, is currently being held in Expo City Dubai, the United Arab Emirates – having commenced on November 30 and carrying on until December 12, 2023.
COP is an acronym for “Conference of the Parties,” referencing the sovereign states which are party to and have signed the UN climate convention in 1992. To this end, host nation the United Arab Emirates brings together 180 global heads of state and government – including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. By contrast, it is worth noting that U.S. President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping will not be attending the global climate summit.
The United Arab Emirates, host nation of COP28, is a primary global oil producer and a giant member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). As such, the Gulf nation will discuss the environmental considerations surrounding the fossil fuel industry in this year’s climate debate. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, took to Instagram to share that he welcomed His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain – in his capacity as the leader of his country’s delegation – in Abu Dhabi, ahead of the COP28 climate summit at Expo City Dubai.
His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ambassador of the UAE to the Kingdom of Bahrain, was also in attendance.
His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom
President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed Britain’s King Charles into Dubai Thursday, November 30, ahead of COP28. The British Royal is expected to deliver a sermon on December 1 regarding necessary global action and state responsibility in the context of climate change.
This will constitute the British monarch’s first crucial address on climate change since he was crowned King in September 2022.
His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, took to Instagram to announce that he greeted His Royal Majesty King Abdullah II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Abu Dhabi, ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28.
His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, UAE Ambassador to Jordan, was additionally in attendance.
