Driverless Taxis in Dubai: Everything We Know…

In partnership with Cruise, the world’s leading autonomous vehicle company, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai (RTA) has officially begun testing driverless taxis in the Jumeirah 1 area.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, shared Instagram stories of the first demo ride of the Chevrolet Bolt-based Cruise autonomous vehicle (AV).

Here, Bazaar Arabia shares visuals from Sheikh Hamdan’s Instagram stories:

According to Khaleej Times, Inside the car with Sheikh Hamdan were Lt.Gen. Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Dubai Police commander-in-chief; Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA); and a human driver from Cruise, who was only on standby and whose hands were off the steering wheel.

In an informative tweet by Sheikh Hamdan, the Crown Prince of Dubai states, ”For the first time outside of the US, Dubai has conducted the first-ever demo test ride of an autonomous electric Chevrolet Bolt, in Jumeirah 1. As part of Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, we’re gearing up to launch our self-driving ridehail service for the public in 2024. This demo test drive is a key milestone in Dubai’s journey to make 25% of all mobility journeys self-driving by 2030 and establish the city as a global pioneer in public transportation and autonomous mobility. Yet again, Dubai has taken another exciting step towards the future.”

The government of Dubai’s investment in smart and autonomous mobility – incorporating sophisticated state-of-the-art technologies – aligns with Cruise’s mission to ensure safe transportation within the Emirate. “While our driverless cars help make streets safer,” declares Cruise, “they also make people feel safer—safer to ride at any time, safer to ride to any neighborhood, safer to ride exactly as they are.”
