Al Ustad Special Kabab, an iconic Dubai institution, has long been the favourite if-you-know-you-know spot for locals and royals alike. The restaurant recently hosted esteemed guests Her Highness Sheikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and her husband, His Highness Sheikh Mana Al Maktoum. And, with walls adorned with thousands of pictures of iconic patrons and guests, the restaurant’s reputation for the perfect Persian kabab proceeds it.

Founded in 1978 by Haji Mohammad Ali Ansari, the eatery is famous for their traditional yoghurt-marinated chicken kababs, expertly grilled over an open flame, and this legacy continues under the watchful eye of his son Mohammed Ali Ansari. Passed down through generations, each meal is a love letter to old Dubai and reflects a commitment to preserving authentic eating and the idea that good food doesn’t need to change.

Rebuilding after a fire in 2016, the restaurant has stayed in its original location. Al Ustad is a star of Old Dubai cuisine, having hosted royalty, including the Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed and icons like Ronaldo. In its unassuming setting, Al Ustad also attracts diverse Bollywood stars, such as Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, as well as international figures like Chris Rock and Jackie Chan.

This unpretentious establishment, with its 42-year legacy, stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of genuine hospitality and exceptional cuisine, making it a beloved spot for locals and tourists. Patrons from various walks of life converge to savour an authentic taste of old Dubai.
