With Cop28 coming up, an innovative project has been announced for the Yas Island Waterfront

Solar Project in Abu Dhabi: A New Development On Yas Island Is Set To Launch

COP28 (Conference of the Parties) will be hosted at Dubai’s Expo City and run for a period of two weeks. With the UAE hosting COP28 combined with achieving its own sustainable goals, a plethora of initiatives have been launched over the years, leading towards a more sustainable future. Currently, a new development is set to take place on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island waterfront, which shall go towards achieving UAE’s net-zero emissions goals.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office’s website, the Yas Bay Waterfront Solar Project shall be carried out by Miral in collaboration with Emerge – a joint initiative formed by France’s EDF and UAE company Masdar, a pioneering energy corporation. Abu Dhabi’s Media Office describes how the 524-kilowatt peak solar photovoltaic project aims to provide reliable and top quality energy to the waterfronts of Yas Island, counteracting 450 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emissions each year. 920 solar modules shall be created and placed along the waterfront to help achieve this target.

Emerge was first developed in 2021 as an energy service company and has made significant progress in the UAE capital. The new solar project on Yas Island marks the third time Miral and Emerge worked together. In 2022, the companies signed an agreement to install solar-energy systems with a range of up to 8.4 megawatts at SeaWorld, Yas Island. In addition to this, earlier in 2023, Abu Dhabi’s Warner Bros celebrated the largest rooftop solar project with 16,000 solar modules placed on the roof, as stated on the Abu Dhabi Media Office site, depicting the UAE’s commitment to sustainability.

The Chief Portfolio Officer at Miral, Jonathan Brown, said: “We are delighted to join forces with Emerge once again to implement this innovative solar project at Yas Bay as part of our commitment to the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve Net Zero by 2050.” The Chief Portfolio Officer goes on to say: “This project will set a benchmark in supplying clean energy to power Yas Bay and further position Yas Island as a top global destination.”

Emerge’s General Manager, Michel Abi Saab, has said: “We are pleased to once again partner with Miral to deliver this exciting solar project at Yas Bay and to further support their efforts towards a more sustainable future. We are confident the 524 KWp project will help to deliver high-quality and reliable clean energy to this premier entertainment destination, which attracts millions of visitors from home and abroad.”
