Travel Notebook: Christian Louboutin
The designer shares his love of Mexico – the inspiration behind his new Mexicaba bag
TRAVEL ITINERARY
“I love travelling. I don’t force myself into a rhythm or schedule, but there’s always a garden to see, a museum, a church, a market, a concert, a piece of architecture – even in places that seem devoid of interest. There is always something to see in places where you don’t expect to find anything.”
HOW TO PACK
“I often start travels to multiple countries with a lot of bags and send them back when I leave each country for the next.”
WHERE TO STAY
“I head to the Gulf peninsula, to the Haciendas of Yucatán, which is much more peaceful than somewhere like Cancun. The grandeur of the estates, some of which were built over 300 years ago, has been beautifully preserved.”
INSPIRATION
“I’ve always had a global outlook. Working with the most wonderful artisans from all over the world is completely natural for me.”
DESIGN
“You only need to visit my house and see all the stuff I’ve brought back over the years to know I really love the diversity of Mexican design.”
WHERE TO EAT, Pujol, Polanco
“The food of Mexico is one of the things that I love the most when I visit the country – Pujol in Polanco in Mexico City is amazing, the mole is aged for 1,000 days.”
Christian Louboutin has collaborated on the Mexicaba bag collection with Taller Maya – part of Fundacion Haciendas del Mundo Maya, whose mission is to preserve authentic craftsmanship in the Yucatan Peninsula.
