According to the Instagram page @UAE_barq_en ,Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, announced on Tuesday “The new crescent for the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal will be born on Friday, September 15 at 5.40 am “UAE time,” and at sunset on the same day, the crescent’s age will be 12:43 hours. The crescent will be located above the wester horizon at an altitude of 4 degrees and shall set approximately 21 minutes after sunset, therefore Saturday, September 16, will mark the first day of Rabi’ al-Awwal according to astronomical calculations, which means that we are 6 months away from Ramadan.”
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.
The fast of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, the religious obligations that all Muslims are required to follow. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, and smoking from dawn to sunset. They also try to avoid negative thoughts and behaviors.
The fast is meant to cleanse the soul and bring Muslims closer to God. It is also a time for Muslims to focus on their faith and to strengthen their relationship with their faith. Ramadan is also a time for Muslims to come together as a community and to help those in need.
The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a feast that marks the breaking of the fast. Eid al-Fitr is a time for Muslims to rejoice and to thank God for the blessings of the month.
Here are some of the things that Muslims do during Ramadan
- Fast from dawn to sunset.
- Pray more often, especially the Tarawih prayers, which are special night prayers that are only offered during Ramadan
- Read the Quran
- Give charity to those in need
- Spend time with family and friends
- Reflect on their lives and relationships with their faith
