The Saudi Arabian Football Federation revealed its list of international referees for 2023 and brought in a piece of exciting news. According to Saudi Gazette, Anoud al-Asmari has become the first Saudi woman to receive the international referee badge from the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA); Anoud was the only female on the list out of 8 verified referees.

According to Sport Star, Anoud said in an interview with AFP “I am happy to be the first Saudi female referee to receive the international badge in the history of Saudi sports,”
When asked how she felt about the opportunity to one-day officiate a men’s game, the referee said she wouldn’t give it any thought until Saudi Football International approved it. Still, with several changes happening in the region, we could be seeing this soon.
So…Who is Anoud Al-Asmari?
Not much can be found about the Saudi Arabian referee, what we do know is, Anoud is thirty-five years old and began her professional career back in 2018, starting off by refereeing a series of football matches for the Saudi Women’s League.
