Outer Limits: A Letter From Our Editor | Harper’s Bazaar Arabia April 2024
Bazaar Arabia’s Group Acting Editor Natasha Faruque shares her candid thoughts on privacy and parenting in an Always On world…
Boundaries: having them, breaking them, and sometimes even bending them – that’s something that’s being discussed more and more in today’s world, in both a professional and personal context. What are the non-negotiable red lines that we are not comfortable with others crossing? What’s a step too far?
The two topics that these conversations tend to revolve around are privacy – especially pertinent when you are a celebrity constantly in the public eye like our cover star Sara Sampaio – and children, with the juggernaut of social media encouraging us to constantly ‘share.’
Sara, who is embarking on a new chapter in her career by transitioning into acting thanks to a high profile role in the upcoming Superman movie, bravely talks about her mental health struggles but “the internet cannot stop telling me to go back to brunette. I’m like, ‘leave me alone!’…Why do you care? It’s my hair!” Given that she’s been in the spotlight since she was 16, she is philosophical about the status quo, admitting that her relationship with Ray Nicholson (yes, son of Jack) has understandably garnered much excitement; “All we’ve got to do is just live our lives and show what we feel comfortable showing.”
The subject is also raised in Bazaar Junior. I can confirm that once you have mini-mes, fellow-parent WhatApp groups explode; are you a liker, lurker or an instigator? The phone seems to perpetually ping, demanding you engage at all hours, no matter what boundaries you’ve tried to set. And how do you engage? Do you even have the right to broadcast photographs that your child might later wish you hadn’t? Are you respecting your kids’ future – and present – wishes?
Like most subjects we tackle at Bazaar Arabia, there isn’t a clear-cut answer to these questions, and no one-size-fits-all rule. But as always, we don’t shy away from discussion; and usually we are all just trying to figure these quandaries out ourselves, one page at a time.
