Pioneering Spirit: A Letter From Our Editor | Harper’s Bazaar Saudi Winter 2024
From trailblazers to change-makers, our Winter 2024 issue highlights how pioneering women from the region and beyond are breaking boundaries and paving the way for future generations
Being one of the first can be exciting; you get a lot of attention. But it can be intimidating too; you have a lot to live up to. You suddenly become a role model, a spokesperson, a lightning rod. That’s what a lot of the dynamic, driven women in our magazine have learnt. But instead of being overawed, they’ve embraced this mantle, and used it to instigate further change. As our impressive cover star Rawdah Mohamed, a hijabi model and activist – aptly described as an influencer – tells us, “I owe it to my community to speak up and to be a voice.” Asayel, a female rapper from the Kingdom agrees, “If I can do something to make it easier for other people, then I will do it.” From Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour, to Yataghan jewellery founder Sarah Abduawood and Pakistani street-style photographer Noorunisa who is making waves behind and infront of the lens, there’s always someone forging a path. It’s up to the rest of us to make sure we follow – and even perhaps carve out our own.
