7 Arab Designers That Took The 2024 Oscars Red Carpet By Storm

From Hailee Steinfeld in Elie Saab to Maitreyi Ramakrishnan in Zuhair Murad, the 96th Academy Awards saw a handful of stars opt for gowns crafted by a few of our favourite homegrown heroes

It’s a bittersweet time for fashion. While the Oscars are a pinnacle moment for the sartorial set, garnering as much (if not more) anticipation for its red carpet arrivals as the ceremony itself, it also marks the end of awards season. Naturally, celebrities are keen to leave an impression (perhaps, even, secure a spot on a Best Dressed list?) and, this year, we’re pleased to see more than a few young stars dressed in stellar designs by regional creatives.

From Elie Saab to Zuhair Murad, Bazaar Arabia shares seven red-carpet looks by Arab designers, each one more exquisite than the next.

The critically-acclaimed makeup artist sported a winning Dima Ayad ensemble at the 2024 Academy Awards. Walking away with the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for the film Poor Things, Nadia’s metallic gold and black creation, made from plisse-tulle material, was the perfect complement to her glistening Oscars statue.

Hailee Steinfeld in Elie Saab

The 27-year-old actress wore an ethereal Elie Saab creation from the designer’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection; pairing it with Chopard jewellery, a sleek up-do, and nude lips. As the star of Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse, which was up for the award of Best Animated Feature Film, she looked every bit the part of a winning leading lady.

For her first appearance at the Academy Awards, Maitreyi wore a design from the Lebanese couturier’s Spring/Summer 2024 Ready-to-Wear collection. The gown featured a wrap-around design, billowing organza skirt, and an oversized statement bow in the front.

YouTube sensation Ashley Yi championed Saudi style, opting for a dress by label Waad Aloqaili. The up-and-coming design house has become a mainstay at red carpet events, with celebrities wearing the brand’s looks at the Venice Film Festival and KSA’s acclaimed Joy Awards. Ashley’s off-white gown was complemented by a flowing, ruffled wrap-around that provided a myriad playful poses as she made her way down the red carpet. Silver earring cuffs and stacked rings pulled the look together, highlighting the gown’s silver beadwork.

Raya Abirached in Rami Kadi

The Lebanese presenter attended the 2024 Academy Awards in an exquisite Rama Kadi creation. The shimmery coral gown featured pleated details in the front, an asymmetrical neckline, and elaborate over-the-shoulder train that brought all the drama required for a memorable style moment on the Oscars red carpet. She completed the look with Bulgari jewels.

Hend Sabri in Nicolas Jebran

Tunisian-Egyptian actress, and star of the Oscar-nominated Four Daughters documentary, Hend Sabri, channelled Lebanese craftsmanship in a Nicolas Jebran gown. The black, shimmery, belted creation sported an off-the-shoulder silhouette, which she complemented with silver statement jewellery and red lips.
