Arab Designers at the Met Gala: 5 Iconic Red Carpet Looks
A few of our favourite moments courtesy of regional home-grown heroes
With the upcoming Met Gala around the corner, the world eagerly awaits the extravagant red carpet looks that will undoubtably grace the event. This year’s theme, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, promises to reimagine garments too delicate to be worn again, through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies. The Metropolitan Museum of Art expects these garments to be visually paired with nature related iconography to reflect the “fragility and ephemerality of fashion.” Let’s take a moment to look back on some of the most iconic Met Gala looks, created by Arab designers.
Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad (2010)
For the 2010 theme, American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity, Jennifer Lopez captivated the audience with her dazzling Zuhair Murad gown. The shimmering silver creation was adorned with delicate beading and intricate embellishments, epitomising old Hollywood glamour with a unique twist. Jennifer’s choice of Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad earned widespread acclaim from fashion critics and fans alike.

Camila Morrone in Elie Saab (2019)
Camila Morrone arrived to the 2019 Met Gala wearing a strapless and undeniably stunning Elie Saab gown, from the designer’s haute couture collection. With its short front and dramatic long train, she paired this baby pink ensemble with matching gloves, silver bangles, and a dainty fishnet headpiece.

Jasmine Tookes in Zuhair Murad (2022)
Wearing an emerald green Zuhair Murad gown, model Jasmine Tookes made a remarkable entrance at the 2022 Met Gala. This draped lamé dress, inspired by the Gilded Glamour theme, was the epitome of glamour and sophistication, as Jasmine wore the dress with lace sequin gloves and a beautiful choker necklace.

Hannah Davis in Zuhair Murad (2016)
Sports Illustrated model Hannah Davis glistened in a mint green haute couture gown by Zuhair Murad in 2016. The floral embellished gown from the designer’s Spring 2016 Couture collection, had a 3D element, which made this look a perfect match for the theme of Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.

Katharine McPhee (2017)
American singer Katharine McPhee stunned in a couture George’s Chakra gown in 2017. The pale blue colour, with its elegant sweeping structure, contrasted beautifully against her statement gold jewellery.
