Coach’s Spring 2024 Collection: A Love Letter to New York’s Timeless Fashion Legacy
Harper’s Bazaar Saudi’s Contributing Culture Editor, Alaa Balkhy, shares her thoughts on the unveiling of the Spring 2024’s collection at one of the Big Apple’s most notable locations
Carrie Bradshaw famously said, “Every year, the women of New York leave the past behind and look forward to the future. This is known as Fashion Week.” That sentiment certainly resonated at the unveiling of Coach’s Spring 2024 collection, held at the iconic New York Public Library on 42nd Street, marking Stuart Vevers’ 10th anniversary as the brand’s creative director.

For many of us, the memory of this location dates back to 2008 when it served what could’ve been the backdrop for Carrie’s wedding. Only upon moving to New York in 2012 did I lay eyes on the majestic building in real life. Just like the SATC protagonist, I was captivated by the library’s grandeur as I ascended its stairs, experiencing the quintessential New York moment Coach delivered on the first day of Fashion Week.
As a proud recent New Yorker, I’ve come to learn that certain locations in the city are more iconic than others, and Stuart’s choice of the New York Public Library underscored the significance of this show — which took place in a room adorned with marble walls, velvet seats, and leather notebooks bearing Coach’s signature kisses. A lively crowd of attendees eagerly awaited what appeared to be a scorching K-pop opening act; Jennifer Lopez, Lil Nas X, and Edward Enninful sat front row.
Before the show commenced, one couldn’t help but notice that Coach’s charms were everywhere — various shapes and colors of objects artfully transformed into playful yet unmistakably Coach-inspired pieces. This charming prelude set the tone for what was to come.

True to its heritage, Coach showcased its mastery of leather in the first look — an elegant long leather dress paired with leather boots and a bowling bag. This was followed by an array of eye-catching ensembles, featuring tailored blazers, trousers, harness boots, quilted duck bags, basket totes, Scorpio earrings, spider brooches, fly brooches, hadrosaur brooches, and heart-shaped sunglasses.
In his show notes, Stuart emphasised his desire to capture the archetypal elements of New York fashion. Though he first arrived in the city during the 90s, he opted to reinterpret the era rather than rely on vintage inspiration, imbuing the collection with his unique outlook on one of the most pivotal decades for style in modern history.

Following the show, guests were led to the library’s grand entrance, where an orchestra waited to serenade the crowd. Ascending the stairs, we found ourselves at a dinner celebrating the 10th anniversary of the brand’s creative director and the show’s unforgettable location.
Coach’s Spring 2024 collection is, undeniably, a beautiful celebration of New York City, paying homage to the influence the city has had on the brand’s rich history and the formidable man at its helm today.
