Louis Vuitton Reveals ‘Masters’ Accessory Collaboration With Jeff Koons

The collection will re-present iconic artworks on classic LV accessories

Louis Vuitton’s fashion ethos has long been entwined with an artistic sensibility. Opening the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, a distinctive art museum designed by Frank Gehry in 2014, the label has also called on some of the most influential artists of our time including Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, Richard Prince and many others to collaborate across their collections and catwalks. 

In the French House’s latest marriage of art and style, they have announced the launch of a new range of bags and accessories created alongside New-York based Jeff Koons, one of the most celebrated figures in the contemporary art scene. Famous for working with popular culture subjects and iconic sculptures, Koons looked to his ‘Gazing Ball’ paintings – a collection of hand-painted reproductions of works by the ‘Old Masters’ including Da Vinci and Van Gogh, as the inspiration for the first chapter of this on-going collaboration. 

Using modern, high-tech applications, Koons’ re-creations of masterpieces by da Vinci, Titian, Rubens, Fragonard and Van Gogh have been transposed some of Louis Vuitton’s classic bag designs including the Speedy, the Keepall and the Neverfull along with the name of the original artist placed boldly across the accessory. Inside the bag you will also find a biography and portrait of the Master whose work has been referenced. 

One of the most unique aspects of the collection is Koons’ re-imagining of one of the Louis Vuitton’s ‘LV’ stamp, which, for this launch, has been updated with his own initials ‘JK’ – a first for the Fashion House’s history. Elements from this new monogram have been placed on the exterior of the bag in metal, as has Koons’s own signature. Each bag also carries an inflatable rabbit, a nod to Koons’s work throughout his 40-year career, and one of his most revered motifs. 

The full collection will be unveiled on April 11 and available in store on April 28.
