America’s First Lady has spoken out about gender equality as part of her Let Girls Learn initiative

Michelle Obama – who is currently in Madrid – has been on tour to promote her Let Girls Learn initiative, where she has been speaking out about women’s rights. The First Lady gave her take on how we can instil better values of equality into our children and break down “gender norms”.

“You can start with how you raise your children if you choose to have them,” she said. “Maybe it means telling your sons that it’s okay to cry, and your daughters that it’s okay to be bossy. Maybe it means encouraging your daughters, not just your son, to study math and science and sign up for the football team. And if there isn’t a team for girls, maybe it means asking why not.”

Obama is at the end of a tour of Liberia, Morocco and Spain, where she has been promoting this initiative, which aims to provide access to education for 62 million girls worldwide. – via Harper’s Bazaar UK
