When Valentino Met Birkenstock: The New 80’s Inspired Collaboration Pulls at Our (Nostalgic) Heartstrings
The “It” sandal of the summer is giving us some major throwback vibes, as both the Italian luxury fashion brand and footwear company team up again to create a comfortable yet chic slide
Crowned “the official sandal of 2020” by fashion retailers the world over, Birkenstocks are the reassuringly reliable wardrobe staple we are craving during these uncertain times.
Abandoned by some for their particular aesthetic whilst adored by others for their comfort, nobody can deny the resurgence of this shoe, which was originally put on the radar of the fashion industry within the 90’s as Paco Rabanne and Narcisco Rodriguez featured the sandals within their respective shows.
Since then the family-owned German brand has continued to innovate by collaborating with big fashion brands such as Proenza Schouler and Rick Owens.
After the initial success of their first collaboration in January 2019, luxury Italian fashion brand Valentino has teamed up again with tthe stalwart footwear brand to create a 80’s centric camouflage print shoe that plays heavily into the aesthetic of the classic Arizona sandal.
Straps in hunter green, soil and black camouflage macro-print remixed with taupe and olive shades create a contrast which pops against the fashion house’s white “VLTN” logo. The sandals feature black metal buckles and the same premium black leather sole as the first collaboration.
The limited edition collection is now available online and in all Valentino stores.
