Versace Recreates Iconic Jennifer Lopez Grammys Moment On The SS20 Runway

When thinking back on iconic fashion moments, it’s easy to recall that Jennifer Lopez green, palm-print, plunge-necked, silk-chiffon Versace gown at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

And cognisant of the current nostalgia for early noughties couture, Versace chose to end its SS20 runway show during Milan Fashion Week with a dramatic bang.

As the models finished their loop of the Piazza Sei Febrraio venue, a voiceover bellowed out across the star-studded runway crowd. The voice on the tannoy asked Google to call up pictures of J.Lo’s iconic Grammys look (the look after which Google image search was invented), before Lopez herself appeared in an updated version of the plunging gown, strutting purposefully down the catwalk to rapturous applause.

After the 50-year-old actress and singer had walked the full length of the catwalk, her skirt billowing magically behind her, she was joined by Italian fashion designer and the current chief creative officer of Versace, Donatella Versace.

Of course, Versace fans will be well aware of the fashion house’s penchant for a jaw-dropping finale. In observance of her late brother Gianni Versace, for the 20th anniversary of his death, Donatella Versace invited squad of supermodels to close the September 2017 show.
Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Carla Bruni and Helena Christensen brought Milan Fashion week to a standstill as they appeared in slinky gold-mesh evening dresses, bringing the house as well as the curtains down at the SS18 runway presentation.

As for the SS20 collection, Versace showcased a number of looks that riffed on the original green jungle designs of 2000, in the form of glittery paillette skirts, glossy fern print PU raincoats and rainforest-inspired suits.
A further nod to Versace’s roots, the original logo – the head of Medusa – appeared regularly in the SS20 collection, on the front of tees and splattered with neon tie-dye.
