How Much Did Carrie Bradshaw’s Dior Newspaper Dress Actually Sell For?

The iconic dress worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in SATC is officially off the market…

Yesterday, the iconic Dior Newspaper dress sold at auction. This dress, which first made headlines during John Galliano’s infamous “Hobo Chic” couture collection of 2000, has been a topic of both admiration and controversy since its debut.

The Christian Dior Daily print made its first appearance in Galliano’s highly criticised collection, which dress inspiration from the homeless people he observed on the streets of Paris. Adding to the controversy was his nod to Tramp Balls opulent 1920s and 30s era parties where Parisian socialites dressed as the impoverished for fun.

This collection, with its distressed fabrics and exaggerated silhouettes, did not sit well with critics who accused Galliano of glamorising poverty. Never one to shy away from controversy, the designer reworked the newsprint theme into his next ready-to-wear show, giving birth to the now-iconic Dior newspaper dress.

This dress gained widespread fame when Sarah Jessica Parker wore it in SATC, turning this once taboo dress, into an absolute must-have piece.

Carrie wore the Christian Dior newspaper dress towards the end of Season 3 in the original series, in one of her character’s most memorable love her/hate her moments. After Natasha’s epic clap back – “Now not only have you ruined my marriage, you’ve ruined my lunch” – the series’ protagonist leaves the restaurant and struts through the streets of Manhattan wearing the newspaper dress.

What Carrie had done was scandalous, to say the least, and the décolletage-baring dress, which she wore in the final scene of the episode, truly encapsulated that. The fashion moment was so iconic, that she donned the dress again 10 years later…
