Modest Fashion is Having its Moment on The Cannes Red Carpet
Covering up is the new cool – not only for those who abide by modest dress codes but international celebrities looking to make a statement without showing skin
The Cannes Film Festival is coming a close and there was no shortage of show-stopping sartorial marvels. From Bella Hadid’s wardrobe of eye-catching ensembles to Rawdah’s architectural Chaney Chan creation, amidst the sea of phenomenal fashion some of our favourite looks were magnificently modest. Stylish yet demure, stars are proving that covering up can also mean standing out.
Here, Bazaar Arabia rounds up eight of our favourite modest looks from the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Rawdah Mohamed
The Queen of Cannes and former Bazaar Arabia cover star Rawdah Mohamed left us in awe with not one but two exquisite red carpet looks. The first was a sculptural pastel blue gown, featuring intricate pleats that wrapped around her like a wave.

The Somali-born model then turned heads in an all red-ensemble by Cecilie Bratsberg Melli. A reinterpreted take on Dior’s New Look, the outfit featured a nipped-waist blazer and fully-pleated skirt. She completed the look with a matching formal hat worn over her hijab.

Yseult
The French singer and songwriter also made waves in a monochromatic version of the iconic New Look. The white cinched-in blazer was paired with a pleated black maxi-skirt, while she accessorised with ruched black gloves and a tilted straw hat.

Meryl Streep
The iconic actress was the epitome of effortlessly cool in a luminous white suit and pinstripe shirt.

Nadine Labaki
Nadine Labaki had a few marvellous modest moments on the Cannes red carpet.

She first looked dapper in a Saint Laurent tuxedo, before stunning in Lebanese designer Jean-Louis Sabaji.

Diala Makki
Embracing her Arab heritage, Diala wore a creation by Ramia Al Ali. The three-piece ensemble featured an intricately embellished floor-length cape that cascaded onto the carpet.

Yara Alnamlah
The Saudi internet star looked regal in all-black wearing a belted gown with feathered trim. She finished off the Rami Kadi creation with jewels by Chaumet.
