This isn’t the first time the iconic piece is being put up for auction. The evening gown was a part of the 1997 Christie’s charity auction consisting of 80 dresses from Princess Diana’s personal collection, reports Sotheby’s. The funds went on to benefit the AIDS Crisis Trust and the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund.
Crafted by British couturier Victor Edelstein, the purple number was one of the many dresses he created for the princess. The designer played a pivotal role in her transformation into the elegant, sophisticated royal the public remembers her as.
Made in 1989 as part of Victor’s autumn collection, the tasteful gown features a deep sweetheart neckline, a tulip-shaped stiffened skirt, beaded buttons, and a twisted detail along the bodice that accentuates the wearer’s figure. The dressmaker’s original sketches show it paired with a tiara, implying that he might have been designed specifically for the Princess and fashion icon, reports Sotheby’s.
During the time, Victor’s designs were considered sleek and modern, fit for a young Princess who was the new face of the British Royal Family.
Captured in all its beauty throughout the 1990s, the recognizable dress is featured in notable paintings and portraits.
A recognisable painting by British artist Douglas Hardinge Anderson featuring Diana wearing the dress is seen hanging at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

Sotheby’s reports that the ball dress is estimated to go for $80,000 to $120,000 or Dhs 293,840 to Dhs 440,760 approximately at auction.
