“It started with a photo on my mother’s mantelpiece of my brother and I on summer holiday in Italy when we were kids in the 1980s. We are wearing clashing Bermuda prints and smiles. I wanted to bring that feeling of fun and sun-drenched innocence into a modern context with a collection that is physically very light and knowingly bourgeois but which also has tangible depth, substance and care in its construction,” says Paul Andrew of his first collection as Creative Director of the storied Italian label.
Salvatore Ferragamo’s SS20 collection is inspired by family, paying homage to the house traditions of craft and artisanship with an effortless, contemporary outlook that is designed for joyful living in the 2020’s. Showcased al fresco at the historic Rotanda Della Bessana, the striking collection was laden with significant references that relayed the story of the Ferragamo brand. The iconic Vara shoe which was intially redesigned by the Salvatore Ferragamo's daughter Fiamma Ferragamo in 1979 is reimagined as the Viva. Prints featuring Ammannati's Fountain of Nepture reference the Florentine monument's recent restorations which were benevolently funded by the Ferragamo family. A joyous celebration of the old and the new, as the Italian heritage brand delivers a powerful, highly relevant new collection that resonates with the now.
Paul Andrew's vision demonstrated the brand's exceptional mastery of leather, from shoes that reference Ferragamo’s iconic shoemaking DNA, to leather RTW punctuated with breezy cut-outs to a phenomenal slouchy new bag silhouette that is already on our wishlists. A neutral palette accentuated with playful prints and hues of brilliant blues and rich earthy tones makes for a light, ultra-sophisticated collection with timeless appeal. A phenomenal start to Paul Andrew’s new role and a total win for Ferragamo.
