PFW: Ready-To-Wear Meets Couture In Valentino’s S/S20 Collection
Pierpaolo Piccioli pays homage to Valentino’s true essence which is imbibed with the spirit of couture
Pierpaolo Piccioli’s S/S20 collection for Maison Valentino was a colourful mastery of high fashion savoire-faire. Inspired by the concept of Grisaille, the monochromatic artistic technique regarded as an exercise of utmost concentration, the collection pays homage to Valentino’s true essence which is imbibed with the spirit of couture.
The outstanding collection featured a literal spectrum of colors, starting and ending with all-white creations; creating the ideal frame for the vibrant flurry of breathtaking designs that lay in between, almost like an ethereal Italian dream that toed the line between RTW and couture.
Color is subtracted from universal pieces such as the white shirt, the shirtdress and Bermuda shorts to bring shape and volume to the fore; the reinterpretations are infused with the richness of couture in cotton poplin. Color slithers in slowly, but this time the focus shifts to letting the body become the structure; subtraction allowing for vibrance to take the lead. Sequins and feathers eloquently heightened drama whilst low-key flat sandals and loose hair lent a decidedly effortless feel. High fashion, easy to wear, flattering and oh-so-dreamy, Pierpaolo Piccioli has just evolved the Valentino dream to soaring new heights.
